Artistsare always seeking inspiration; so imagine the exceptional results when they are invited to work in a stimulating environment such as the Casa Wabi Foundation, the popular artists retreat established in 2014 by Mexican artist, Bosco Sodi, located in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.Directed by Patricia Martin, this oceanfront compound was designed Japanesearchitect Tadao Ando designed these Oaxacan beach houses in 2016, contrasting a 312-metre-long concrete wall with traditionally thatched roofs. Casa Wabi was initially intended as an artists’ retreat but has now opened its doors to everyone – with proceeds going back to support the work of the art foundation.
Wabicomes from the root word ‘wa,’ referring to harmony, peace, tranquillity and balance. On the other hand, Sabi means ‘bloom of time’. It refers to the effect of time on an object. Japanese Architect Tadao Ando describes wabi sabi as an art of finding aesthetics in the forgotten realm and accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.
